Breathing through your mouth while sleeping can lead to a host of health problems.

In the course of evolution, humans have strayed far from the normal physiological mechanisms of mammals. This has resulted in several errors that seem illogical from a biological perspective. The biggest of these errors is that humans breathe through their mouths. Among mammals, only those over one year old can breathe through their mouths. This is a respiratory structural defect that arose approximately six million years ago as humans sought to learn language. This defect has brought many negative effects to the human body.

Habitual mouth breathing can easily cause bad breath

First, breathing through the mouth results in an open mouth and a listless, relaxed expression, which is not aesthetically pleasing. Second, mouth breathing is often a cause of bad breath. Normally, saliva keeps the mouth moist, but people who habitually breathe through their mouths experience dryness because their mouths are always open. This makes it easier for bacteria to multiply, leading to bad breath. Furthermore, mouth breathing can also affect dental alignment. Why?

When humans swallow food, they normally close their lips tightly to lower the pressure inside the mouth compared to the external pressure. However, if one breathes through the mouth, one must also breathe through the mouth while eating, making it impossible to close the lips completely. Therefore, to reduce the pressure inside the mouth, the tongue takes over the task of blocking the gap between the upper and lower teeth. In other words, the upper and lower teeth and the tongue take over the function that the lips should be responsible for.

Teeth can withstand a weight of 50-100 kg.

In this situation, the teeth experience a pressure similar to that of the tongue pushing them forward. This pressure is approximately 40-60 grams. And this pressure is applied continuously with each of the three daily meals. You might think that even 40-60 grams of force applied to the teeth isn't a big deal. However, this is a huge misconception!

Teeth are indeed very resilient in vertical pressure, capable of withstanding 50-100 kilograms of weight to crush food. However, their lateral strength is quite weak. For example, the pressure applied to the front teeth by braces is only 20-70 grams. Such a slight force is enough to change the position of the teeth. By analogy, people who breathe through their mouths are essentially undergoing orthodontic treatment for protruding teeth for several years, and with far greater force than regular braces.

Sleep apnea can lead to sudden death.

Furthermore, mouth breathing is closely related to sleep apnea syndrome (SAS). Symptoms of sleep apnea include cessation of breathing during sleep and loud snoring. It is also widely known as a contributing factor to sudden death, including heart disease and stroke. Even without causing heart disease or stroke, sleep apnea can cause serious problems such as accidents while driving due to sudden drowsiness. Some major traffic accidents are suspected to be related to sleep apnea.

Finally, as mentioned at the beginning, mouth breathing is also one of the causes of intractable diseases unique to modern society, such as asthma, atopic dermatitis, hay fever, and cancer. Next, we will explain why mouth breathing instead of nasal breathing causes these diseases.

Mouth breathing can cause bacteria in the mouth to swarm around the body.

Once the "root cause" of a disease is understood, the treatment methods are all the same; every disease has a cause. Mammals have been able to continue evolving for nearly 500 million years because they follow the rules of life. Humans, because they learned language 600 years ago, have lost one of the most important structures of mammals: the continuous structure of the trachea that runs from the nostrils through the nasal cavity into the posterior nasal cavity and then into the lungs.

Breathing is the most important movement in life. It is a rule of life for mammals to ensure that breathing is completely unobstructed at all times; however, if we breathe through our mouths when we talk or sleep, the temperature of our throats drops, which results in white blood cells carrying bacteria from the mouth or throat to circulate throughout the body. If these bacteria contaminate the islet cells of the pancreas, it can lead to diabetes; if they settle in joint cells, it can cause rheumatism; and if they settle in subcutaneous tissue cells, it can cause urticaria or atopic dermatitis.

Maintain body temperature at 37°C, chew slowly and thoroughly.

If one experiences "cold poisoning," intestinal bacteria will invade the body's cells. If one lacks rest, the bone marrow's hematopoietic function will be impaired, the strength of white blood cells will weaken, and intestinal bacteria will spread throughout the body. As a result, the mitochondria that control intracellular respiration will be damaged, leading to disease.

Once the mystery is solved, the treatment methods are actually the same. They involve correcting external respiration down to the lungs, maintaining a body temperature of 37°C, keeping the body warm, and ensuring sufficient nutrition for cellular respiration by consuming foods that are gentle on the stomach and intestines and chewing them thoroughly to protect the mitochondria. Doing these things will ensure good health.
