Employees who are tired and full can improve work efficiency

Can educating bosses improve employee sleep? A US study found that approximately 30% of adults sleep less than six hours a day.Offering "sleep health education" courses to employers can improve employees' sleep and thus increase work efficiency.

A team led by Professor Ryan Olsen of the Institute of Preventive and Occupational Medicine at Oregon Health & Science University found that after employers received sleep health education courses, about half of the employees tended to have more flexible working hours, which in turn improved their sleep.

Researchers surveyed 800 employees participating in a trial, and the results showed that within twelve months of the course starting, 470 employees had more flexible work hours and slept eight minutes or more more each night. The study has been published in the latest issue of the journal *Sleep Health*.

Researchers explain that even an extra eight minutes of sleep each night can add up to nearly an hour of extra sleep over seven days, which is medically significant.

Dr. Carol Esch, director of sleep medicine at Meridian Health in New Jersey, said,Insufficient sleep every day can easily increase the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.Eight extra minutes of sleep a day may seem like a small amount, but it still has its significance. Carol Esch emphasizes that...When employees sleep well, their work efficiency usually improves, so the benefits extend beyond the employees themselves to the company or employer as well.

The doctor further pointed out that,Employees who get enough sleep are more emotionally stable and less prone to impulsive or irritable behavior, which reduces the number of problems for the company.Doctors say that although everyone’s sleep needs are different and some people are still full of energy even if they don’t sleep much, most studies suggest that most people need an average of seven or eight hours of sleep per night.
