Having trouble getting a good night's sleep? It could be due to one of six sleep disorders.
Epoch Times reporter Qin Fei compiled and reported.
Everyone knows that quality sleep benefits physical and mental health, while insufficient sleep can affect mood, health, and even weight. However, surveys show that many people have sleep problems.Sleep disordersSome sleep disorders are caused by pre-existing medical conditions or stress, while others have unknown causes. Fortunately, research is confirming the increasing prevalence of sleep disorders and providing information on how to treat and cure them. lolwot.com introduces the following six sleep disorders that you may have never heard of.
1. Alcohol dependenceSleep disordersSymptoms (Alcohol-Dependent Sleep Disorder):The patient has a habit of using alcohol as a sedative to promote sleep. As their dependence on alcohol increases, its sedative effect will continue to grow. The body's ability to absorb alcohol decreases, leading to a continuous increase in alcohol intake. Therefore, this sleep disorder can lead to alcohol poisoning. Patients often experience headaches, sweating, dehydration, mild withdrawal symptoms, and frequent awakenings from dreams.
2. Cognitive sleep disorder (SSM):Also known as contradictionInsomniaPatients often sleep very little or even cannot fall asleep at all, while laboratory studies show their sleep is still within the normal range. This type of insomnia frequently occurs in young and middle-aged men and can lead to depression and anxiety. Medication and behavioral therapies such as sleep restriction can help alleviate symptoms.
3. Too little or too much sleep:The human body typically needs 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night to ensure normal daytime functioning. However, this isn't the case for everyone. Some people need more than 10 hours of sleep to feel fully rested, while others only need 5 hours. The proportion of men is slightly higher among long sleepers, accounting for 21% of the total population. While this doesn't necessarily indicate a health problem, long sleep increases the risk of depression and anxiety. Short sleepers are also predominantly male, and those with sleep deprivation have a higher rate of premature death.
4. Nocturnal Sleep-Related Eating Disorder (NSRED or SRED):Also known as "sleepwalking narcolepsy," this condition often involves eating while asleep. Patients may drink beverages and eat sweets normally, but they may also ingest spoiled food, raw food, wood, glue, or even cigarette butts. These patients are often clumsy in handling food and may even accidentally injure themselves while cutting food or opening cans. Medication can help some patients, but it is not effective for everyone. Drugs such as Ambien can trigger the condition. Divorce, drug addiction, and other life stressors are also contributing factors.
5. Central Sleep Apnea:Many people may have heard of sleep apnea, but many are unaware that there are different types. The most common type is obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the airway is blocked. However, people with central sleep apnea hold their breath because their brain doesn't send signals to the body to breathe. People who use drugs or painkillers, have heart or kidney disease, or have suffered head injuries from a stroke or car accident may develop this condition. Central sleep apnea can also cause diabetes, cardiac arrest, obesity, and stroke.
6. Rhythmic Movement Disorder (RMD):Children with RMD may unconsciously bang their heads, roll over, shake their heads, or hum in their sleep. These movements are often more noticeable when the child is awake but already sleepy, but can recur during deep sleep. These movements are frequently observed when the child is lying on their stomach or back, but can also be observed when the child is sitting upright. RMD often occurs in people with developmental disabilities, such as autism. It is most common in infants and young children, but can occur at any age. The symptoms usually disappear as the child grows older, therefore no treatment is necessary.
